Understanding Polyvagal Theory in ADHD Coaching

What is Polyvagal Theory?

Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, explains how our autonomic nervous system (ANS) influences our emotional and behavioral responses to stress. It focuses on the “vagal” pathways of the vagus nerve, which regulate our body’s responses to stress and safety.

The Three States of the Autonomic Nervous System

  1. Ventral Vagal State (Social Engagement System)
    • Characteristics: Feelings of safety, connection, calmness, and social engagement.
    • Function: Enables positive social interactions and relaxation.
    • Physiology: Activates when we feel safe, promoting social engagement.
  2. Sympathetic State (Fight or Flight)
      • Characteristics: Feelings of anxiety, stress, anger, or excitement.
      • Function: Prepares the body to respond to perceived threats.
      • Physiology: Increases heart rate, releases adrenaline, and prepares muscles for action.
  3. Dorsal Vagal State (Shutdown or Immobilization)
    • Characteristics: Feelings of numbness, disconnection, and shutdown.
    • Function: Causes us to “freeze” or shut down in response to extreme stress or trauma.
    • Physiology: Activates to conserve energy and protect from harm.

Why is Polyvagal Theory Important?

  • Understanding Emotional Responses: Explains that our reactions to stress are deeply rooted in our biology.
  • Improving Mental Health: Helps develop strategies to manage anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other conditions through techniques like deep breathing and mindfulness.
  • Enhancing Relationships: Shows how being in a ventral vagal state can improve empathy, communication, and social connections.

Applying Polyvagal Theory to Everyday Life

  1. Recognize Physiological Responses: Pay attention to bodily sensations to understand your ANS activation and dominant response.
  2. Practice Self-Regulation: Use techniques like slow, diaphragmatic breathing, gentle touch, yoga, or meditation to manage your emotional state.
  3. Build Social Connections: Foster positive relationships to engage your social engagement system, promoting safety and reducing stress.
  4. Identify Triggers: Understand and manage situations or stimuli that activate your stress response.
  5. Seek Professional Support: Work with a professional familiar with Polyvagal Theory to better understand and manage your ANS responses.

The above is adapted from information created by The Polyvagal Institute.
